See also:Morse, and produced " A See also:Bar-See also:Room Politician " and " A Toper Asleep." Subsequently he painted some landscapes on the See also:river See also:Hudson, and in 1839 went to See also:Rome. On his return to See also:America he painted portraits and began the See also:illustration of The See also:Pilgrim's Progress, but his eyesight failed, and in 1844 he went back to Rome. Returning to New York in 1846, he devoted his See also:time chiefly to portrait-See also:painting, although he has painted many genre, religious and See also:historical subjects. He was See also:president of the See also:National See also:Academy from 1862 to 'I87c, and again in 1897–1890.
