Paston Letters. Robert Poynings was implicated in See also:Jack See also:Cade's See also:rebellion, and Edward was himself concerned in a Kentish rising against See also:Richard III., which compelled him to See also:escape to the See also:Continent. He attached himself to See also:Henry, See also:earl of See also:Richmond, afterwards See also:King Henry VII., with whom he returned to See also:England in 1485. By Henry VII. Poynings was employed in the See also:wars on the Continent, and in 1493 he was made governor of See also:Calais. In the following See also:year he went to See also:Ireland as lord deputy under the viceroyalty of See also:Prince Henry, afterwards King Henry VIII. Poynings immediately set about Anglicizing the See also:government of Ireland, which he thoroughly accomplished, after inflicting See also:punishment on the powerful Irish clans who supported the imposture of See also:Perkin See also:Warbeck. He then summoned the celebrated See also:parliament of See also:Drogheda, which met in See also:December 1494, and enacted the " Statutes of Drogheda," famous in Irish See also:history as " Poynings's See also:law " (see See also:STATUTE: Ireland), which made the Irish legislature subordinate to, and completely dependent on, that of England, till its See also:repeal in 1782. After defeating Perkin Warbeck at See also:Waterford and See also:driving him out of Ireland, Poynings returned to England in 1496, and was appointed See also:warden of the Cinque Ports. He was employed both in military commands and in See also:diplomatic See also:missions abroad by Henry VII., and later by Henry VIII., his most important achievement being the successful negotiation of the " See also:holy See also:league " between England, See also:Spain, the See also:emperor, and the See also:pope, in 1513.

In 1520 he was See also:

present at the See also:Field of the See also:Cloth of See also:Gold, in the arrangement of which he had taken an active See also:part. He died in 1521. By his wife, See also:Elizabeth See also:Scot, Poynings See also:left no surviving issue, and his estates passed through a See also:collateral See also:female See also:line to the earl of See also:Northumberland. He had several illegitimate See also:children, one of whom, See also:Thomas Poynings, was created Baron Poynings in 1545, but died in the same year without heirs.
