He became See also:colonel of a See also:regiment (the 87th See also:foot) known as Keith's Highlanders, who won distinction in the See also:continental See also:wars, but were disbanded in 1763; he was then employed in the diplomatic service, in which he achieved considerable success by his honesty, courage, and knowledge of See also:languages. In 1781 he became See also:lieutenant-See also:general; in 1789. he was made a privy councillor. From the Keith See also:family through the See also:female See also:line was descended George Keith See also:Elphinstone, See also:Baron Keith of See also:Stonehaven, Marishal and afterwards See also:Viscount Keith (q.v.), whose titles became See also:extinct at the See also:death of his daughter See also:Margaret, Baroness Keith, in 1867.
