He was the permanent chairman of the Republican National Convention in 1868, was a delegate to the conventions of 1872, 1876 and 188o, was a member of See also:Congress from See also:December 1872 until See also:March 1875 and again in 1879-1881, and was a See also:United States senator from Mr until the 3rd of March 1905, being one of the Republican leaders both in the See also:House and the See also:Senate. From 1873 to 1876 he was See also:president of the United States Centennial See also:Commission, the See also:great success of the Centennial See also:Exhibition being largely See also:clue to him. He died at See also:Washington, D.C., on the 17th of March 1905.
