MOHUN, See also:CHARLES MOHUN , 4th See also:BARON (c. 1675-1712), was the son of the 3rd Baron Mohun, who died in See also:October 1677 as the result of a See also:wound received while acting as second in a See also:duel. The boy had no See also:regular See also:guardian, and before he was seventeen he had earned an unpleasant notoriety in See also:London for rowdyism and See also:brawling, had fought a duel and had been tried on a See also:charge of See also:murder. His friend, See also:Captain See also:Richard See also:Hill, a roystering See also:young officer, was in love with the actress Mrs See also:Bracegirdle, and thought See also:William See also:Mountfort, the actor, to be his successful See also:rival. On the See also:night of the 9th of See also:December 1692 Mohun assisted Hill to See also:attempt the actress's See also:abduction. The attempt failed, and Mohun and Hill then escorted Mrs Bracegirdle to her See also:house, and subsequently remained together outside drinking till the See also:appearance of Mountfort, who lived See also:close at See also:hand. Greetings were exchanged between Mohun and Mountfort, and the latter made a disparaging remark about Hill, who either without warning (according to Mountfort's deathbed statement) or in See also:fair fight (according to other See also:evidence) ran Mountfort through the See also:body, and then absconded. Mohun was arrested and put on trial in See also:Westminster See also:Hall before his peers for murder as an See also:accessory before the fact (1693), but by an overwhelming See also:majority the peers found him not guilty. This See also:verdict has been severely criticized, notably by See also:Macaulay, who saw in it merely a See also:gross instance of class favouritism. But a careful examination of the evidence (in the See also:State Trials) justifies the decision, and establishes the presumption that the fight was a fair one. In 1699 Mohun was put on his trial for another alleged murder, but was unanimously and quite justly acquitted. His boon See also:companion, See also:Edward See also:Rich, See also:earl of See also:Warwick (1693-1701), who was tried on a See also:separate See also:indictment for the same See also:crime, was found guilty of See also:manslaughter.

On this occasion Mohun expressed regret for his past See also:

life, and he seems subsequently to have made a genuine attempt to alter his ways and to have taken a See also:practical See also:interest in public affairs. But in 1712 his violent See also:temper again got the better of him, and he forced the 4th See also:duke of See also:Hamilton, with whom he had been at See also:law for some years, into a desperate duel in See also:Hyde See also:Park in the See also:early See also:hours of the 15th of See also:November, in which both combatants were killed. See also:Thackeray has utilized this incident in Esmond. See also:Lord Mohun had no issue, and on his See also:death the See also:barony, which was created in 1628 in favour of his See also:great-grandfather See also:John Mohun (c. 1592-1640), became See also:extinct.
