He received the honorary degree of See also:doctor of divinity from See also:Glasgow University in 1881. When the See also:Nottingham Congregational See also:Institute was founded in 1863 he became the first See also:principal, a See also:post which he held till 1898, when he was succeeded by See also:James See also:Alexander See also:Mitchell (1849-1905), who from 1903 till his See also:death was See also:general secretary of the Congregational See also:Union. Paton became See also:vice-See also:president of the British and See also:Foreign See also:Bible Society in 1907. He took an active See also:part in the See also:foundation and direction of a number of See also:societies for religious and social See also:work, notably the See also:National See also:Home See also:Reading Union Society and See also:English See also:Land Colonization Society, and was a See also:constant contributor to See also:literary reviews. His publications include The Two See also:fold Alternative (3rd ed., 1900), The Inner See also:Mission of the See also:Church (new ed., 1900), and two volumes of collected essays. His son, John See also:Lewis Paton (b. 1863), who headed the See also:Cambridge classical'tripos in 1886, became See also:head See also:master of See also:Manchester See also:grammar school in 1903.
