James Rumsey of Virginia, but Fitch obtained exclusive rights in steam-navigation in New See also:Jersey, See also:Pennsylvania and Delaware, while a similar See also:privilege was granted to Rumsey in Virginia, See also:Maryland and New See also:York. A steam-See also:boat built by Fitch conveyed passengers for hire on the Delaware in the summer of '790, but the under-taking was a losing one, and led to the See also:dissolution of the company. In 1793 he endeavoured to introduce his invention into See also:France, but met with no success. On his return to See also:America he found his See also:property overrun by squatters, and See also:reaping from his invention nothing but disappointment and poverty, he committed See also:suicide at Bardstown, Kentucky, on the 2nd of See also:July '798.
