OHIO See also:COMPANY , a name of two 18th See also:century companies. organized for the colonization of the Ohio Valley. In 1750-1751 See also:Christopher Gist, a skilful woodsman and surveyor, explored for the company the Ohio Valley as far as the mouth of the Scioto See also:river. In 1752 the company had a pathway blazed between the small fortified posts at Will's See also:Creek (See also:Cumberland), See also:Maryland, and at Redstone Creek (See also:Brownsville), See also:Pennsylvania, which it had established in 1750; but it was finally merged in the See also:Walpole Company (an organization in which See also:Benjamin See also:Franklin was interested), which in 1772 had received from the See also:British See also:government a grant of a large See also:tract lying along the See also:southern See also:bank of the Ohio as far See also:west as the mouth of the Scioto river. The See also:War of See also:Independence interrupted colonization and nothing was accomplished. The second company, the Ohio Company of Associates, was formed at See also:Boston on the 3rd of See also:March 1786., The leaders in the See also:movement were See also:General See also:Rufus See also:Putnam, Benjamin See also:Tupper (1738-1792), See also:Samuel See also:Holden See also:Parsons (1737-1789) and See also:Manasseh See also:Cutler. Dr Cutler was selected tonegotiate with See also:Congress, and seems to have helped to secure the See also:incorporation in the See also:Ordinance for the government of the See also:North-West Territory of the paragraphs which prohibited See also:slavery and provided for public See also:education and for the support of the See also:ministry. Cutler's See also:original intention was to buy for the Ohio Company only about 1,500,000 acres, but on the 27th of See also:July Congress authorized a grant of about 5,000,000 acres of See also:land for $3,500,000; a reduction of one-third was allowed for See also:bad tracts, and it was also provided that the lands could be paid for in See also:United States securities.
