His See also:great-great-great-See also:grand-See also:father, See also:Capel Hanbury, bought See also:property at Pontypool and began the family See also:iron-See also:works there in 1565. His father John Hanbury was a wealthy iron-See also:master and member of See also:parliament, who inherited another See also:fortune from his friend Charles Williams of See also:Caerleon, his son's godfather, with which he bought the See also:Cold-See also:brook See also:estate, Monmouthshire. Charles accordingly took the name of Williams in 1729. He went to See also:Eton, and there made See also:friends with See also:- HENRY

Henry See also:Fielding, the novelist, and, after marrying in 1732 the heiress of See also:Earl Coningsby, was elected M.P. for Monmouthshire (1734–1747) and subsequently for See also:Leominster (1754–1759). He became known as one of the prominent gallants and wits about See also:town, and following See also:Pope he wrote a great See also:deal of satirical See also:light See also:verse, including See also:Isabella, or the See also:Morning (1740), satires on See also:Ruth See also:Darlington and Pulleney (1741–1742), The See also:Country Girl (1742), Lessons for the See also:Day (1742), See also:Letter to Mr See also:Dodsley (1743),&c. A collection of his poems was published in 1763 and of his Works in 1822. In 1746 he was sent on a See also:diplomatic See also:mission to See also:Dresden, which led to further employment in this capacity; and through Henry See also:Fox's See also:influence he was sent as See also:envoy to See also:Berlin (1750), Dresden (1751), See also:Vienna (1753), Dresden (1754) and St See also:Petersburg (1755–1757); in the latter See also:case he was the See also:instrument for a See also:plan for the See also:alliance between See also:England, See also:Russia and See also:Austria, which finally See also:broke down, to his embarrassment. He returned to England, and committed See also:suicide on the 2nd of See also:November 1759, being buried in See also:Westminster See also:Abbey.
