The See also:hundred of East Grinstead (Grenestede, Estgrensted) was in the See also:possession of the See also:count of See also:Mortain in io86, but no mention of a See also:vill or See also:manor of East Grinstead is made in the Domesday Survey. In the reign of See also:Henry III. the hundred was See also:part of the See also:honour of See also:Aquila, then in the See also:king's hands. The honour was granted by him to See also:Peter of See also:Savoy, through whom it passed to his niece See also:Queen Eleanor. In the next reign the king's See also:mother held the See also:borough of East Grinstead as See also:parcel of the honour of Aquila.

East Grinstead was included in a See also:

grant by See also:Edward III. to John of Gaunt, See also:duke of See also:Lancaster, and it remained part of the duchy of Lancaster until See also:James I. granted the borough to See also:Sir See also:George See also:Rivers, through whom it was obtained by the Sackvilles, earls of See also:Dorset. East Grinstead was a borough by See also:prescription. In the 16th See also:century it was governed by at See also:alderman, See also:bailiff and See also:constable. It returned two members to See also:parliament from 1307 until 1832, but was disenfranchised by the Reform See also:Act.
