After receiving his See also:early See also:education at the high school of his native See also:city, he became a student at See also:Exeter See also:College, See also:Oxford, where he graduated B.A. in 1819. He took See also:holy orders, and became a See also:curate at Lantegloss, in See also:Cornwall, and subsequently at Nayland, in See also:Suffolk; in 1827 he settled in See also:London. His first books were Select See also:Translations from See also:Quintus Smyrnaeus (1821), an edition of See also:Collins (1827), and Specimens of See also:British Poetesses (1825). He issued annotated See also:editions of See also:George See also:Peele, See also:Robert See also:Greene, See also:John See also:Webster, See also:Thomas See also:Middleton, See also:Marlowe, and See also:Beaumont and See also:Fletcher, with lives of the authors and much illustrative See also:matter. He completed, in 1833, an edition of See also:James See also:Shirley See also:left unfinished by See also:William See also:Gifford, and contributed See also:biographies of See also:Shakespeare, See also:Pope, See also:Akenside and See also:Beattie to See also:Pickering's Aldine Poets. He also edited (1836–1838) See also:Richard See also:Bentley's See also:works, and Specimens of British Sonnets (1833). His carefully revised edition of John See also:Skelton, which appeared in 1843, did much to revive See also:interest in that trenchant satirist. In 1857 his edition of Shakespeare was published by See also:Moxon; and the second edition, a See also:great improvement on the old one, was issued by See also:Chapman & See also:Hall in 1866. He also published Remarks on See also:Collier's and See also:Knight's Editions of Shakespeare (1844); A Few Notes on Shakespeare (1853); and Strictures on Collier's new Edition of Shakespeare (1859), a contribution to the Collier controversy (see COLLIER, JOHN See also:PAYNE), which ended a See also:long friendship between the two scholars. He was intimately connected with several literary See also:societies, and undertook the publication of See also:Kempe's Nine Days' Wonder for the See also:Camden Society; and the old plays of See also:Timon and See also:Sir Thomas More were published by him for the Shakespeare Society. He was associated with Halliwell-See also:Phillips, John Pgyne Collier and Thomas See also:Wright as one of the founders of the See also:Percy Society, for See also:publishing old English See also:poetry.

Dyce also issued Recollections of the Table Talk of See also:

Samuel See also:Rogers (1856). He died on the 15th of May 1869. He had collected a valuable library, containing amongst other treasures many rare Elizabethan hooks, and this collection he bequeathed to the See also:South See also:Kensington Museum. He displayed untiring See also:industry, abundant learning, and admirable See also:critical acumen in his editions of the old English poets. His wide See also:reading in Elizabethan literature enabled him to explain much that was formerly obscure in Shakespeare; while his See also:sound See also:judgment was a check to extravagance in emendation. While preserving all that was valuable in former editions, Dyce added much fresh matter. His Glossary, a large See also:volume of 500 pages, was the most exhaustive that had appeared.
