He graduated at Harvard in 1773, served in the See also:War of See also:Independence, rendering a particular service at See also:Boston by sketching plans of the See also:British See also:works, and was appointed second aide-de-See also:camp to See also:General See also:Washington and in June 1776 See also:deputy See also:adjutant-general to General See also:Gates, but resigned from the See also:army in 1777. In 178o he went to See also:London to study under See also:Benjamin See also:West, but his See also:work had hardly begun when the See also:news of the See also:arrest and See also:execution of See also:Major See also:Andre, who was deputy adjutant-general in the See also:English army, suggested the arrest of Trumbull as having been an officer of similar See also:rank in the See also:Continental army; he was imprisoned for seven months. In 1784 he was again in London working under West, in whose studio he painted his " See also:Battle of Bunker See also:Hill " and " See also:Death of See also:Montgomery," both of which are now in the Yale School of See also:Fine Arts. In 1785 Trumbull went to See also:Paris, where he made portrait sketches of See also:French See also:officers for " The Surrender of See also:Cornwallis," and began, with the assistance of See also:Jefferson, " The See also:Signing of the See also:Declaration of Independence," well-known from the See also:engraving by See also:Asher B. See also:Durand. These paintings, with " The Surrender of See also:Burgoyne," and " The Resignation of Washington," were bought by the See also:United States See also:government and placed in the Capitol at Washington. Trumbull's " Sortie from See also:Gibraltar " (1787), owned by the Boston See also:Athenaeum, is now in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and a See also:series of See also:historical paintings, the " Trumbull See also:Gallery," by far the largest single collection of his works (more than 50 pictures), has been in the See also:possession of Yale See also:College since 1831, when Trumbull received from the college an See also:annuity of $1000. His portraits include full lengths of General Washington (1790) and See also:George See also:Clinton (1791), in the See also:city-See also:hall of New See also:York—where there are also full lengths of See also:Hamilton and of See also:Jay; and portraits of John See also:Adams (1797), Jonathan Trumbull, and See also:Rufus See also:King (1800); of See also:Timothy See also:Dwight and See also:Stephen See also:Van See also:Rensselaer, both at Yale; of See also:Alexander Hamilton (in the See also:Metropolitan Museum of See also:Art, New York City, and in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, both taken from Ceracchi's bust); a portrait of him-self painted in 1833; a full length of Washington, at See also:Charleston, See also:South Carolina; a full length of Washington in military See also:costume (1792), now at Yale; and portraits of See also:President and Mrs Washington (1794), in the See also:National Museum at Washington. Trumbull's own portrait was painted by See also:Stuart and by many others. In 1794 Trumbull acted as secretary to John Jay in London during the negotiation of the treaty with See also:Great See also:Britain, and in 1796 he was appointed by the commissioners sent by the two countries the fifth See also:commissioner to carry out the seventh 'See also:article of the treaty. He was president of the American See also:Academy of Fine Arts in 1816-1825.

He died in New York on the loth of See also:
